When we reach the full moon of a lunar cycle, it’s incredibly illuminating and intense! It can feel like the part of the movie where the truth is finally revealed, the gloves come off, and the will to fight kicks in. Although it can feel exciting, it can also be really disorientating and chaotic. It can feel like you’re under spotlight and being forced to react. It may all feel really discombobulating. Often, we would just put this down to events happening in our life, or our own fluctuating emotions, but when we recognise the underlying energy, it can help us process and manage it more effectively.
This Moon is known as the Flower Moon, and it’s also a Super Moon, AND a lunar eclipse. This means that the moon will appear reddish in colour as the only light that reaches it will come via the Earth’s atmosphere and that filters it so only red wavelengths get through. It is also known as a Blood Moon- the reason why it turns red is shown in this diagram. The only light that reaches the moon is coming via the earth’s atmosphere because it is a lunar eclipse:
Blood Moons historically have been seen as ominous and even signalling the end of times, but actually the only thing ominous is the spooky red colour which we know is due to the complete alignment with the sun and earth as per the above diagram.
Eclipses actually symbolize new beginnings, endings and clean slates. So if you’ve been thinking about a decision you need to make, or something you want to start, this is the perfect time- the Moon’s energy will support you with this. It’s a point when we can prepare for new chapters and tie up loose ends (exactly what the Autumn phase the 7 days after the full moon is for)
The fact this Blood Super Moon is also in Sagittarius which has the energy of adventure, spontaneity, movement and exuberance (no surprise my son is a Sagittarius rising!) means that this could cause you to desire new experiences that are a change to your normal routine. It may be a time for you to share something that’s been in your heart that you want to change. A routine that no longer works for you perhaps. Sagittarius is all about freedom to move on from toxic situations that limit our autonomy. It could well feel quite good as far as Full Moons go – Sagittarius is an optimistic energy and if you take action to release the old and move forwards, it will feel like a relief.
All fire signs share their characteristics with fire and by looking at a candle you can begin to understand how this energy behaves…all answers are found in nature. Sagittarius energy is found at the bottom of the flame- a creative and philosophical kind of energy. It doesn’t shine just for its own sake but to enable others to shine brightly too.
Like fire, it is changeable, it adapts to its environment and isn’t fixed, it has high ideals. Being ruled by Jupiter means it is naturally all about expansion. Generally it’s a very positive energy, but its shadow side can mean it can become ungrounded and lose touch with reality. It can feel like floating around from one direction to the next a bit aimlessly
A playful childlike spirit embodies the energy of Sagittarius. Sagittarius is a powerful energy for going deeper and seeking the truth in life and creating something ground-breaking with newfound wisdom.
In your journal, list all your current routines, how do you plan your days / weeks? What is your exercise routine (or lack of one!) How do you manage your meals, your me time, if you have kids, how are you managing their schedules? What would your dream life look like? What needs to change to start moving in that direction? Then take some time to reflect on which routines are no longer working for you. On a piece of paper, write down all those routines that no longer serve. Now simply burn this paper. If you can, scatter the ashes out in local woods or fields and watch them fly away giving you freedom to set up new routines. This is especially relevant this year after a year of lockdown and possibly sitting in front of the TV too much and indulging in a bit too much comfort food (I know I have and my trousers are all now too tight!)
Sagittarius is a yang Fire sign, and is masculine in duality. If you are interested in exploring more about your yang/yin balance, I have a free download to help.
